This workshop will teach you how to successfully set up and implement a STEM-based program on a shoestring budget. Through a comprehensive visual presentation, the workshop participants will examine examples taken from a large scale, inquiry based, outdoor, STEM program.

The workshop examines what constitutes STEM work in a preschool setting and how STEM activities can further leadership qualities, creative, social, language and cognitive capabilities of young children. It also examines how scientific exploration can be applied across age levels and how to create an environment which integrates outdoor and indoor curriculum.

Some of the questions which will be addressed include:

  • What is the function of the outdoor science lab?
  • What are some tips and tricks to selecting interesting materials to work with?
  • How to transform part of the preschool yard into a STEM lab.
  • How to introduce the materials to the children. How to integrate outdoor and indoor curriculum.

The attendees will come away with comprehensive knowledge of what materials to use and why, how to present them, how to create and maintain excitement and engagement, how to work across age groups, and how to problem-solve due to space and time restrictions. The workshop includes hands-on participation and is open to all audience levels.
