For Cinco De Mayo we celebrate these 5 famous women who are making a difference in the world, many of whom you’d be surprised to know are of Mexican Descent. Happy Cinco De Mayo!
5. Uma Thurman
Uma Thurman is on the Board of Directors of Room to Grow, an organization whose mission is to is to enrich the lives of babies born into poverty throughout their critical first three years of development by providing one-on-one parenting support and essential baby items throughout their children’s critical first three years of life. She even auctioned off a signed pair of her shoes at their Spring Gala in 2014!
Fergie is involved in giving back with many organizations including AIDS LIFE, American Foundation for Aids Research, Habitat for Humanity, the Avon Foundation, Global Green, the Red Cross and more. In 2014, she was honored at the Emery Awards for her work with the LGBTQ community. She was also honored by Glamour Magazine at their 20th Annual Women of the Year awards for her work with breast cancer awareness and AIDS research.
3. Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato gives back in so many ways. In 2013, she celebrated her 21rst birthday by volunteering with Me to We’s partner, Free the Children, building a school in the Maasai Mara Region of Kenya. She has also been a wonderful advocate for mental health. She was diagnosed as bipolar in 2011, and has since been a shining example of how personal experience and celebrity can be used to make a truly positive difference in the world. She started a treatment scholarship program in honor of her father who also suffered from mental illness, and started the joint campaign, Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health. For this work and more, she was awarded the Artistic Award of Courage in March of this year.
2. Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez works with UNICEF, and has started the initiative, Charity, Action, Now! UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, helps save and improve the lives of children worldwide by providing health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more. Selena has gone on a field mission to Ghana, performed in concerts to raise money for UNICEF and their mission, and began Charity, Action, Now! to encourage young people to get involved and take action in helping children around the world.
1. Jessica Alba
Jessica Alba founded the Honest Company in 2011. The Honest Company creates effective, safe, eco-friendly, beautiful, convenient, and affordable products for babies and homes and considers charity work a huge part of its identity. In December, they donated 500 toys to families in need, in November, they helped donate 1.2 million diapers to families in need, they donated $50,000 to the MaxLove Project which helps families battling childhood cancer, they gave away over 3,000 backpacks to Head Start programs for children in Los Angeles, NJ, NY and TX, the list goes on and on. Jessica Alba’s commitment to children and improving the lives of those in need is incredible!
