Here at Dream Big Science and Art, we are definitely party experts, and we know that children tend to go to the same parties over and over again throughout the year. It gets tiring for the kids AND the parents. So… here are some simple and fascinating party themes that will keep kids and parents engaged, having fun, AND learning about the world around them!
4. Earth Themed Party
Birthday parties inspired by the earth are fantastic because there is so much to be enjoyed and no limit! Children should be exposed to natural materials from the world around them, and birthday parties are a great excuse to celebrate those! That’s right… celebrate! Because we take the earth for granted, and there is such brilliance and discovery in playing with rocks, wood, sand, dirt, seeds, and more! One of the great advantages of having an earth party is that many of the materials can be found in nature. You can also ask stores for flowers they may be getting rid of and take a nature walk to the park to pick up sticks, stones, and whatever else you can find.
3. Water Themed Party
Water serves as a brilliant tool for so many situations with children, and one of the most joyful is for birthday parties! You will need containers for the water, bags of ice, an outdoor space for the children to explore where it’s ok to spill, and water playthings (sponges, plastic animals, pipettes, etc.). The children should not be given access to the hose so adults can control the water usage, but fill up enough containers for them, and they won’t need to! Water parties are mesmerizing and a great way to keep things relaxed and fun. They are also a terrific option for a summer party when the heat is getting to everyone!
2. Air Themed Party
Air Parties are always beautiful to watch because of all of the colors that will be flying through the air! Very important for air parties are the materials that fly. You’ll need scarves, feathers, large swaths of fabric, balloons or beach balls, cotton balls, straws, fans and more! Children love to watch the way the materials will fly and fall and dance through the air.
1. Light Themed Party
These parties can be conducted inside or outside (pun intended ;)). Exploring light and the beautiful colors and shadows it creates is a fantastic way for children to celebrate and expand their world! Flashlights and gels are great for creating and mixing different colors, and a surface on which to make shadow puppets is always a hit! You can also include things like magnifying glasses and work with liquid watercolors, because after all, color IS light!
